Just read a facebook status saying… ‘Media can never be
happy with anything that happens’ I pity the woman who wrote that since she
doesn’t know that purpose of media is to inform the society and media persons
earn their bread & butter by informing!! She is masters in English!!! I’m
grateful to god to have been blessed with better English teachers.
Though I hated her post, it made me think about our
education system, which tends to produce uneducated literates! In India, any
person who can write his name or for that matter do his/her own signature is
considered to be a literate and this is how the literacy rate is calculated.
I remember my mom telling me, as a kid, that I have an edge
over all others students across the world since I’ll learn three different
languages and be fluent in all three by the time I complete my high school. And
that is a privilege to all students in India…there might be some variations
state-wise and in Punjab we study Punjabi, Hindi and English and ridiculously
we learn ABC in Pre nursery and we see a Punjabi book in fourth grade!!!
The Indian education system is age old, the one introduced
by the British in the 18th century, which is obviously very
different from the one Britain has! We have not been able to change it let
alone develop our own. The English rulers in India wanted to provide Indians
with education only because they wanted clerks, as they were the managers but
they could not call for the huge number of clerks from their own land. Since those centuries, Indian education
system is still doing the same…producing clerks hard and fast.
Every now and then, the savior of Indian society-The Hindi
Cinema produces a movie based on the theme of revolutionizing the education
system but with no effect on the law makers or the people who matter and can
change the things for better. 3 idiots being the most recent one, media reports
about it and debates the poor conditions of the education system, calls the
education minister or someone closely related to the talk shows or discussion
based shows like ‘Hum log’ or the ‘Big Fight’ but again with no effect on the
people who can actually make the required change!
As media studies lecturer, I think that the media is doing
their job much better than the doctors, engineers, managers with fake degrees
and better than doctors, engineers, managers and teachers who could not learn
anything being a student still not ready to learn.
God save the world.
Agreee....... But again if there are fake engineers, doctors etc...... there are media people who are not doing their job, but making fake stories for their own growth...........
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with the gaps in education system, as students we also feel the same..... and the history you described was really informative....
And lets do something about lawmakers.
Suggest ?
Media too does lot of wrong...reason is again lack of education...there are very less number of media persons who are media literate!!!
ReplyDeleteLawmakers are no less than goons!!!
Education is the only solution to mos the problems in Indian society.
Ma'am please describe education ?
ReplyDeleteHow different the education should be from present education or what are the changes you are expecting?
Education is learning and understanding and not mugging up things and vomiting them in exams...
ReplyDeleteIf all literate seriously understood all things they were taught...they would serve their respective professions in much better way!! Since the dont know the basics they tend to do wrong things and may or may not learn in whole of their professional lives.
Literacy should not be judged on the criteria Indian Govt has set up...person knowing how to sign...its just so incorrect!!!
I liked your article! It's true that media is the most powerful tool to awaken the crowd. There are many fake degree holders who are just wasting their life and giving wrong direction to others that follow!
ReplyDeleteNice post :)
Thankyou Varun.
