I would have never written about fasting but then people
talk too much about me being on fast for these auspicious nine days that I had
to pen down this secret!!!
Fasting is basically abstinence from food mainly solid food
and since people who know me are not able to digest the fact that I’m fasting…I’m
foodie! But my question is does being foodie that make
me less spiritual...I hope not. :p Fasting holds spiritual importance in many
cultures and religions.
I’m not very religious types though but respect people I
love! So, the story goes something like this…
Once upon a time…rather in the year 2001, a oh-not-so-studious
girl had just finished her Matric exams!!! Her mother was too worried for her
since she was good at only and only two subjects English Literature and English
Grammar!!! She cried when she was to solve Maths problems, she made lame
excuses to skip studying chemistry… (My momsy often recalls best excuse, “the
chemistry book smells like sulphur!) Can’t
believe I could not think anything better. She hated the Physics teacher so
much that she started to hate Physics too! But she could read ‘The Merchant of
Venice’ whole day long…and could recite Portia’s lines all by heart… “Tarry a little; there is something else. This
bond doth give thee here no jot of blood; The words
expressly are 'a pound of flesh:' Take then thy bond, take
thou thy pound of flesh; But, in the cutting it, if thou
dost shed One drop of Christian blood” being my favorite
lines J
Her father was more than happy that his daughter is about to pass the ICSE
board exam…with what marks…he hardly cared! She loved her Pops for this till
date :D So, her worried mother discussed this very topic all day long with her
grandmother…much to her distress. So, one night before she fell asleep, she asked
her granny, “Badi ma…agar marks ache nahi aaye toh kya hoga?” Badi ma kissed
her forehead and told her, “Ramji hai naa…pray for good marks!” She got curious
to know if it was possible not to study and still get marks to make her momsy
happy! But to her disappointment, she was told that you should do what you can
do leave rest to God, and that God never disappoints his followers. So, she
decided to go to temple every morning with her Badi Ma…Deal.
Clicked by me-Diwali 2009 |
She happily went to the temple every day and one fine day
she was told that the result would be out in another three days and fortunately
the fourth day was the first navratri…so she again made a deal that she got good
marks…good enough to make mom happy…she would fast all nine day of navratri and
be a Durga Ma fan all life. And it so happened that the result was not out by
the end of the third day and she was in a dilemma about the deal she made, only
person to come to her rescue was her Dadi J so she told her Badi
ma on the way to the temple, on the fourth day about her deal. She was politely
asked to fast and wait for good fruits…
The results came after the Ashtami…but they were good enough
to make her and her gorgeous mother happy!!!
And I, the oh-not-so-studious girl in the story became a
life-long devotee of Divine Mother! It been more than ten years and wonderful
ten years…but I don’t get into any of the religious activity other than this…So
Am I not religious? Am I semi religious? Am I spiritual?
Badi ma would have been able to answer this one…but my
fasting could not keep her any longer. Miss you Badi Ma. Love you so much.

DeleteSuperb! Very interesting write-up! And let me tell you, "being religious and being spiritual are two very different things.."
ReplyDeleteand you are spiritual I guess. You believe in observation with reason. It's all a game of beliefs. You are what you believe yourself to be. If you believe that going to temple resulted in good marks, then surely it did. Depends on you what you believe! :)
I liked your way of progressing till the end of the post; it kept me interested all the way....!
